Digital Research & Curation Center

The Digital Research and Curation Center (DRCC) develops and supports the information technology infrastructure of the Sheridan Libraries. It focuses on system administration and software development related to the institutional repository, data archive, and customized user interfaces.

The DRCC builds information technology infrastructure through a set of signature projects that engage faculty and students who have identified novel requirements for digital scholarship. Most of the DRCC projects are funded in part through grant funds.

The DRCC’s data infrastructure program began in 2001 through a collaboration with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and resulted in a $10 million grant through the National Science Foundation’s DataNet program in 2007.

Data Conservancy

The Data Conservancy (DC) was launched through a grant from the National Science Foundation’s DataNet program, which built upon prior experience with managing data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The grant provided the DC team an opportunity to broaden its data infrastructure development and gain better understanding of the challenges in collecting, preserving, and curating different types of research data.

DC has redesigned and refactored its core infrastructure to leverage existing software and technologies and to build deeper connections with both research and technology communities. Most notably, we have embraced approach of data representation by the Linked Data Platform by building our data archive with the Fedora 4 repository platform and leading the development of the RMap Project with funding from the Sloan Foundation.

Archaeology of Reading

With funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Sheridan Libraries is working with the University College London and Princeton University Libraries to create a digital annotation environment that will allow scholars to analyze the behaviors of readers of early printed books.

Roman de la Rose

In partnership with the Bibliotheque Nationale de France and with funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Sheridan Libraries created this digital library of Roman de la Rose manuscripts that will soon be relaunched as a Digital Library of Medieval Manuscripts.

Visualization Wall in the Brody Learning Commons

We partnered with the Kata Lab in the Department of Neurology at Johns Hopkins to create a visualization wall and table in the Brody Learning Commons. The wall offers a unique opportunity to learn more about library collections and services and to engage in a growing set of games, including one that will help patients rehabilitate from strokes and other neurological injuries.
