Overview

Public Health Studies has been the largest major on the Homewood campus between 2014-2019. It is broadly interdisciplinary. In their senior year, students take most classes at East Baltimore in the Bloomberg School of Public Health.  

Programs offered are BA, BA/MHS (Master of Health Science), and BA/MSPH in health policy, occupational and environmental hygiene, or international health.

This collection supports teaching and research in public-health-related departments, schools, and courses throughout the university, including

  • Bloomberg School of Public Health and the other professional schools at East Baltimore
  • Whiting EP program and KSAS Advanced Academic Program
  • Related social sciences courses and research

The collection includes many areas of Medicine and the Social Sciences, including epidemiology, sociology, health communications, psychology, gender studies, and global health. Specific areas include statistics, demographics, sanitation, maternal/child/fetal health, infectious disease, and injuries.

General

This collection primarily supports undergraduates, but graduate students and other patron groups from Homewood and East Baltimore also use it.

In addition, many cross-JHU collections in medicine and social sciences support this program. The selector focuses on non-course textbooks and reference books, as well as books in new focus areas when they arise.

Emphasis is on current and recent scholarship. All geographic areas and peoples are included.

Collaborations within JHU

  • The PHS librarian and the Bloomberg School of Public Health librarian(s) are in close touch, to help each other with reference and research questions
  • Jim Gillispie covers most of the data and statistics needs of the Homewood-based PH students and researchers
