Collection Development Statement

Overview

This collection supports all students and researchers at all levels throughout JHU. Programs of study offered are BA, BA/MA, PhD, and a mathematics minor.

  • Focus areas include algebraic geometry, arithmetic geometry, number theory, partial and stochastic differential equations, harmonic analysis, category theory, Malliavin calculus, stochastic modeling in scientific computing, statistical inference, and data assimilation, representation theory, and Fourier analysis.

Departments/disciplines/programs/subject Areas Supported

Again, this collection supports the entire university. Almost everyone must take at least one math class, and we have materials for everyone from freshmen to faculty in math-heavy departments (e.g., Applied Math and Stats; and Computer Science), schools (e.g., Carey Business School), and labs/centers/institutes (e.g., Institute for Data Intensive Engineering and Science).

General

This collection supports all patron groups from freshmen through research faculty.

Unlike the Whiting Department of Applied Math and Stats, there is much less interdisciplinarity within this department.

Classical areas such as geometry, algebra, calculus, number theory, and topology are deeply researched, although areas such as topology

Formats Selected

While journal literature and conference proceedings are preferred, print books have high checkout rates and ILL/BD borrow rates.

Research periodicals and scholarly monographs from academic and professional society publishers are preferred. Reference works include literature databases, handbooks, and online and print series such as Schaum’s Outlines and Problem Solvers, to aid undergraduates and new grad students.

Preferred formats:

  • Journals
  • Conference proceedings
  • Books
  • Literature databases

Material acquired by request or selectively:

  • Reference works
  • Handbooks
  • Textbooks

Material not collected:

  • Biographies
  • Ephemera
  • Histories
  • Juvenile works
  • Manuscripts
  • Microform
  • Pamphlets
  • Preprints

Languages Collected

We collect almost completely in English. Although scholarly work in the field has been done in many languages over the centuries, the top five languages (German, French, Italian, Chinese, and Spanish) make up less than 3% of the collection since 2000.

Chronological or geographical focus

Emphasis is usually on current and recent scholarship, although Math is heavily dependent on its older work and literature.
